What's the best way to get from Bristol to Gatwick?

Bristol to Gatwick is the awkward one. There's no direct train, the rail route through Reading or London takes 3.5 hours or more with changes, and coaches are slower still. A fixed-price taxi is from £229 with us and does it in about 2 hours 45 minutes, door to terminal, at any hour. For early departures and groups it's often the only option that actually works.

Why this route is worse than Heathrow

Heathrow at least sits on the M4 corridor with decent coach links from Bristol. Gatwick is the far side of London. By rail you're changing at Reading onto the cross-country service, or going into Paddington and across London to Victoria, with cases, to catch another train. Three and a half hours if everything connects, and for a morning flight the trains don't start early enough. The coach involves London traffic. This is why the Gatwick question is less "which is cheapest" and more "which of these will definitely get me there".

4 people with luggage£57 each, one car£160+ combined, two changesSlow but cheap

Solo, flexible, daytime flight, no luggage worth mentioning: the train is defensible and cheaper. Everything else, and especially anything departing before 10am, the car wins on certainty. Four sharing brings it to £57 each, which is inside the range of a walk-up rail fare anyway.

The early Gatwick departure

For a 7am flight we'd collect you from central Bristol around 3:15am. M4, M25, M23, empty at that hour, and you're at departures by 5. No train in the country can do that from Bristol. The fare's the same, from £229, as it would be at lunchtime.

Coming back

Return pickups include flight tracking and 45 minutes free waiting from landing, and Gatwick's arrivals-to-kerb walk will use some of it. Book the return with the outbound and both legs are locked at the fixed price.
