A fixed-price taxi is quoted when you book and doesn't change, whatever the traffic or the time. A ride-hailing app uses surge pricing, so the fare rises with demand and can jump at early mornings, late nights and bad weather, exactly when you fly. For a booked airport run, fixed price is usually cheaper and always more predictable.

Why apps surge exactly when you fly
Surge pricing goes up when lots of people want a car and there aren't enough drivers. Early-morning flights, late arrivals, Friday nights and bank holidays are all peak demand, and they're also when most airport transfers happen. So the times you most need a car are the times the app is most likely to charge more. A fixed price is set once and ignores all of that.
When surge pricing can win
We'll be straight about it. If you're travelling at a quiet mid-morning hour, on your own with hand luggage, and there's no surge, an app can come in a pound or two under a pre-booked car. The gamble is that you don't know the price until you tap, by which point you're committed and your flight's already booked.
What "fixed" protects you from

The honest version
If your whole trip depends on catching a flight, predictability is worth more than shaving off a pound you might not even save. Book fixed, know the number, and spend the morning thinking about your flight instead of watching a fare tick up. If you genuinely just need a cheap mid-morning hop and you're flexible, an app is fine. Different jobs, different tools.
