Is a car seat required by law in a taxi?

No. Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles carry an exemption from the UK's child car seat law: children over 3 can travel on the adult seat belt, and children under 3 can travel unrestrained in the rear. That's the legal minimum, not a recommendation, which is why we fit a proper infant, child or booster seat for £5 each, selected at booking, subject to availability.

Checked September 2026. This page covers the law and how seats work in practice. For the wider family transfer picture, MPV luggage space and meet and greet, see our family airport transfers page.

The exemption, in plain English

The rule that applies to your own car doesn't carry over to a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle. In one, a child over 3 years old is legally allowed to travel using the adult seat belt instead of a booster, and a child under 3 is legally allowed to travel unrestrained in the back seat if no suitable child seat is available. It's a long-standing exemption, written into UK child car seat law specifically because taxis can't guarantee they'll have every seat size on board for every job. That's the current position as we understand it; car seat law is occasionally amended, so if you need the precise legal wording rather than the practical summary, check gov.uk before you travel.

Why we still recommend a seat

Legal and safe aren't the same question. An adult belt across a small child, or no restraint at all for a toddler, isn't how we'd carry our own kids, so every booking lets you add a proper seat: an infant seat for 0 to 12 months, a child seat for 1 to 4 years, or a booster for over 4s. Each one is £5, fitted before the driver sets off to collect you, and available subject to what's in the car that day. No seat is free of charge, and we'd rather say that plainly at booking than have it come as a surprise at the kerb.

Bringing your own seat instead

If you'd rather use your own seat, that's straightforward: bring it with you and the driver will help you get it into the car, though it's worth checking the fit yourself since it's your equipment. What we don't offer is a place to leave it. If you're flying out for a week or two and don't want to carry an infant seat through the terminal both ways, we understand why that's tempting, but we don't run a storage service between your outbound and return flights. The practical options are to book one of our £5 seats for both legs instead, or bring your own and carry it there and back.

Frequently asked questions

Can my 3-year-old travel without a car seat in a UK taxi?
Legally, yes. The taxi and private hire exemption allows children over 3 to use the adult seat belt. We'd still recommend booking one of our £5 seats rather than relying on the exemption.
Do you fit the seat, or do I have to?
If you book one of ours, it's fitted before the driver arrives to collect you. If you bring your own, the driver will help you get it in, but it's worth checking the fit yourself since it's your seat.
Can the taxi store my child's car seat while I'm away?
No. We don't offer a seat storage service between your outbound and return flights. Book a seat for both legs instead, or carry your own seat with you both ways.
How much do child seats cost, and can I get one free?
£5 each, whether it's an infant, child or booster seat. No seat is free of charge, and availability is confirmed when you book, not on the day.
Is it actually illegal to travel with a child unrestrained in a taxi?
No. Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles are specifically exempt from the general child car seat law, which is why the choice is left to you rather than enforced by the driver. Confirm the current wording on gov.uk if you need the precise legal text.

Add a seat at step 3 of online booking, or call 0117 966 6666 and we'll set it up for you. See also our family airport transfers page for luggage, MPVs and meet and greet.

"We were a little worried the first time whether they'd be reliable — this is now our second airport transfer and we wouldn't use anyone else. Our flight was delayed and Sam was still there to pick us up."
