Bristol's charge, year by year

Bristol Airport's Drop Off and Pick Up charge for up to ten minutes has gone up three years running: £5, then £6 in 2024, £7 in 2025 and £8.50 from 5 January 2026. The airport put the latest rise down to its business rates bill more than doubling after the Budget. Stay longer and it climbs: £10.50 for 10 to 20 minutes, £13 for 20 to 40.

Ten minutes is shorter than it sounds

The clock starts when the camera in the entry tunnel reads your number plate. In our timings from thousands of trips, reaching a bay from that camera takes up to five minutes at busy times, usually evenings. Driving back out through the exit barrier, some way from the bays, takes a minute normally and up to three when busy. That can leave two minutes to unload or load, so a pick-up with luggage easily runs into the £10.50 band.

Don't stop on the airport roads instead. Bristol Airport's cameras watch them, and stopping there brings a £100 Parking Charge Notice, reduced to £60 if it's paid within 14 days.

Searches have exploded

Google Trends shows UK searches for "airport drop off charge" in the week to 7 October 2026 up more than 5,000% on the same week last year, which Google marks as a "Breakout". Over the past three months they are up 200% on the same period of 2025, and over the past 12 months up 70%. Searches about Stansted's charge, which rose from £7 to £10 in March 2026, are up 30% over the year.

What a lift to Bristol Airport costs, now diesel is £2

A lift is four journeys: there and back to drop you off, there and back to collect you. With diesel at a record 200.01p a litre, the RAC says a typical 45mpg diesel car costs about 20p a mile. Add the £8.50 charge twice:

FromMiles each wayA lift nowIn February
Bristol city centre9£24£22
Weston-super-Mare16£30£26
Bath19£32£28
Taunton38£48£39
Cardiff38£48£39
Cheltenham55£61£49

Each figure is the diesel for four journeys plus £17 in drop-off and pick-up charges.

How to avoid the charge at Bristol

Dropping off: use the free drop-off area in the Silver Zone car park. From there it's about a three-minute walk to the stop for the free shuttle bus to the terminal. The shuttle runs until midnight; after that you have to phone for it, so it suits early-morning flights less well.

Collecting: your driver waits in the Waiting Zone, free for the first hour, until you text from the baggage hall. Ten minutes goes quickly when a flight is late or the bags are slow.

Parking or a taxi?

For a short trip or a week away, Bristol Airport's own car parks cost more than a return taxi from central Bristol:

TripShort StayMulti-StoreyTaxi there and back
2 nights£120£119£96
7 nights£185£209£96

The taxi figure is our fixed fare from central Bristol, £48 each way, with the drop-off charge included; booked online with the 20% discount it is £39 each way, £78 there and back. For a week that is £89 to £113 less than parking, before the diesel to get there and back.

How we worked it out

  • Drop-off charges: each airport's published charge for its closest drop-off zone, from our airport guides' research (checked August to October 2026, with each airport's own pages and parking comparison sites). Where the first tariff runs longer than ten minutes (Stansted, Glasgow, Birmingham), the table shows that first price. London City's ten-minute figure is £8 plus five minutes at £1. Birmingham's tier table is not published in full, so its figure is approximate.
  • Bristol's history: Bristol Airport's tariff announcements, reported by ITV News West Country on 5 January 2026.
  • Search interest: Google Trends, United Kingdom, search term "airport drop off charge", to 7 October 2026: past week against the same week of 2025, past three months against the same period of 2025, and past 12 months against the 12 before.
  • Timings: Tick Taxi's own timings from thousands of trips to Bristol Airport: entry camera to a bay up to five minutes at busy times; bay to exit barrier about one minute normally, up to three at busy times.
  • Penalty: Bristol Airport's Parking Charge Notice for stopping on its roads, £100 (£60 if paid within 14 days).
  • Parking and taxi: Bristol Airport's car park prices quoted in October 2026; Tick Taxi's fixed fare from central Bristol.
  • Lift costs: diesel at 200.01p a litre (RAC, 2 October 2026) and 142.38p (RAC, 28 February 2026); the RAC's 20p a mile for a 45mpg diesel car; typical road miles from each town centre; four single journeys and two stays of up to ten minutes at £8.50; rounded to the nearest pound.

Fuel figures from the RAC; Bristol charges from Bristol Airport; Heathrow's from Heathrow. Checked October 2026.
