Can you pick someone up for free at Bristol Airport?

Tick Taxi · Uppdaterad

Yes: Bristol Airport's Waiting Zone is free for the first 60 minutes, and the person you're collecting can come to you on the Car Rental Centre bus from Bus Stop 1 in the Transport Interchange. Collecting at the terminal end means the Drop Off & Pick Up car park instead, which costs £8.50 for up to 10 minutes and more after that. Tick Taxi drivers collect from Bristol Airport every day, and this is how they keep the cost down.

Checked October 2026.

The free option: the Waiting Zone

The Waiting Zone is a car park close to the Car Rental Centre, set aside for drivers who are waiting to collect a passenger. It is free for the first hour:

Time in the Waiting ZoneCharge
Up to 60 minutesFree
1 to 2 hours£20
Each extra hour, or part of one£20

There are two ways to use it:

  • Your passenger comes to you. Once they have their bags, they go to Bus Stop 1 in the Transport Interchange and take the Car Rental Centre bus. You never drive near the terminal, and it costs nothing. With cases and children it adds a bus ride to the end of the journey, so it suits light luggage best.
  • You wait, then drive round. Sit in the Waiting Zone for free until they message that they're through, then drive to the Drop Off & Pick Up car park and pay for a short stop. This is the way our drivers do it.

One rule catches people out. Registrations are captured on the way in and on the way out, and a car that comes back into the Waiting Zone within 30 minutes of leaving gets an automatic Parking Charge Notice. Leave once, when your passenger is ready. The postcode for a sat nav is BS48 3DW.

The paid option at the terminal end

The Drop Off & Pick Up car park is on the Transport Interchange, a 3 to 5 minute walk (about 140 metres) from the terminal. It is built for quick stops, and the charge starts when the camera reads your number plate on the way in:

Time in the Drop Off & Pick Up car parkCharge
Up to 10 minutes£8.50
10 to 20 minutes£10.50
20 to 40 minutes£13
40 to 60 minutes£30
1 to 2 hours£60

Two hours is the maximum stay. Blue Badge holders get up to 40 minutes for £8.50: scan the barcode on the back of the badge at the exit barrier.

Why you can't wait on the roads

The roads on the airport site are Red Routes with a no-stopping policy, and the airport monitors them. Drivers may not stop, unload or park on them, even to pick someone up. The charge is £100, reduced to £60 if it's paid within 14 days.

Beyond the airport's own roads, the Red Routes on the A38 and the layby by the airport entrance are the responsibility of the local authority and the police. Neither is a place to wait. The Waiting Zone is free for an hour so that nobody has to.

How Tick Taxi drivers time a collection

Collecting people from Bristol Airport is what our drivers do all day, and the first thing they know is that landing is the start of the passenger's walk, not the end of it. These are Tick Taxi drivers' typical times from the plane landing to the passenger reaching the car:

Passenger arrivingLanding to the car, typically
No checked luggageAbout 30 minutes on average
No checked luggage, but the plane is held before reaching a stand, or there aren't enough buses to the terminalAbout 45 minutes
Checked luggage, normal hoursAbout 40 minutes
Checked luggage, when more than 5 flights land at about the same timeAbout 55 minutes
Unusual situationsUp to about 1.5 hours

Tick Taxi drivers' typical times at Bristol Airport, from our own pickups. A guide, not a promise: your flight can be quicker or slower. What slows it down is on How long does it take to get out of Bristol Airport after landing?

So the routine is simple, and it works just as well for you:

  1. Watch the flight, not the timetable. We track the flight number, so the driver knows when it actually lands.
  2. Drive into the Waiting Zone around the landing time, not long before. The free hour starts when you drive in. With checked bags, expect the passenger about 40 minutes after landing, or about 55 when several flights land together, which still fits inside the free hour. Only an unusual day runs past it, and then the next hour is £20.
  3. Leave the Waiting Zone when the message says "got my bags", not when the plane lands. If they're travelling with hand luggage only, that message usually comes sooner, at around 30 minutes.
  4. Go straight to the bay. The ten minutes start at the entry camera, and in our own timings reaching a bay can take up to five minutes when it's busy. Add the drive back out to the exit barrier and a ten-minute stop can leave as little as two minutes to load the car. The full timings are in our UK airport drop-off charges study.

What collecting someone yourself really costs

The car park charge is the part you see. The rest is the fuel there and back, the time, and the bands above: once a slow bag belt pushes you past ten minutes, the stop is £10.50, and past twenty minutes it's £13. Each band worked out against our drivers' landing times is on What does it really cost to collect someone from Bristol Airport?

A Tick Taxi fare is fixed when you book and already includes the £8.50 charge. Airport pickups get 45 minutes free from the actual landing time, longer than the typical 30 to 40 minutes at normal hours, so an ordinary slow bag belt costs nothing extra, there is no night rate, and the driver loads the bags. Meet and greet, where the driver meets your passenger inside the arrivals hall, is an optional £15. Fares are the same in both directions: Bristol Airport to Bath is from £59, and to Weston-super-Mare from £49. For an address in Bristol, see How much is a taxi from Bristol Airport to your area?
